As much as we might not want to admit it, Edmonton’s cold season is right around the corner. Last week I started the weekend BBQing on the deck, and finished it off by getting the gas fireplace running for the first time since April. Before the deep freeze hits, October is the time to make sure your home is ready for whatever winter brings. A little maintenance now can save you from unwanted and even expensive surprises come snowfall.
1. Cover your Air-Conditioner
Do not wait until your air conditioner has a foot of snow on it, or worse ice.
2. Empty garden hoses and store them in the garage or garden shed
Water remaining in the hoses can freeze or even burst, damaging your garden hoses
3. Test/Service the Furnace
There is nothing worse than a broken furnace in the winter, and emergency HVAC/plumbing services at 2am can set you back hundreds of dollars just in the call out fee alone. Test your furnace before the cold really settles in, or better yet, have it tuned and swap the filter.
4. Get your Chimney Swept
If you are one of the lucky ones who have a wood burning stove or fireplace, you should be getting your chimney swept every year to keep the flue clean and free of debris. Many buyers get a WETT inspection of their chimneys during the inspection, but never do any routine maintenance of the chimney after. These inspections and cleans are essential to keeping your fireplace working efficiently and preventing house fires. Showing regular maintenance of your fireplace may be helpful for insurance purposes down the road as well.
Winterizing your home isn’t just about avoiding problems, it’s about making your space warm, safe, and efficient for the months ahead. Take a few hours this October to get things ready, and you’ll thank yourself when the snow piles up. If you need any recommendations for local professionals who can help you get in gear for winter such as plumbers or WETT inspectors, do not hesitate to reach out.
